Description:
This course is for Registered Nurses or Graduate Nurses who have already
taken their boards looking to specialize in the operating room.
Operating Room Nurses provide professional nursing care to patients
undergoing surgery by preparing and maintaining the operating room for
all surgical procedures including special equipment needed for daily
procedures and emergencies.This course will provide basic didactic
perioperative education that will give the novice OR nurse the rationale
and theory needed to provide safe patient care, used in conjunction with
a clinical preceptorship.
Course Objectives:
This course will introduce students to the AORN (Association of
periOperative Registered Nurses) Standards of Practice. The course will
also cover all components of the role of the perioperative nurse when
functioning as a scrub person and as a circulating nurse. This course
will include training in disinfection/sterilization of
equipment/instrumentation, as well as safety and patient concerns in the
perioperative setting. Maintaining concise and complete records and
reports as well as relevant anatomy, aseptic technique, and
perioperative assessment will be covered.
Upon completion of this course all students will take a final exam
provided by AORN and be awarded 40 contact hours after successfully
passing the final examination with an 80% or higher grade. Upon
successful completion of the final exam, there is a complimentary one
year AORN membership.
Prerequisites:
A currently licensed, without provision or condition registered nurse in
the United States or a graduate nurse who has already taken the nursing
board examination awaiting licensure.
Course Outline:
To receive a continuing education certificate in Perioperative nursing,
students must complete 40 web-based online continuing education hours.
The course can be completed in 10 weeks for full-time day students.
