Emergency Room Nurse Orientation

This course will prepare new graduate nurses as well as seasoned nurses from outside the Emergency Department for the rigors of Emergency Nursing.  It will be a 14 week course of both didactic and clinical experience that is based on the Emergency Nurses Association core curriculum. The didactic portion of the course will be taught by the Keiser instructors and will be based on Sheehy’s Emergency Nursing Principles and Practice, 6th Edition as a well as Proehl’s Emergency Nursing Procedures, 6th Edition.  Both of these texts mirror the Core Curriculum and complement the courses objectives. It will be a combination of lectures and practical exercises in the classroom to reinforce basic procedures done in the Emergency Department.  The clinical experiences that the nurses receive will be under the direction of one of the host facilities experienced ED nurses and will be supervised by a Keiser instructor.  This will ensure a continuum of the educational experience and allow the ED interns to use the instructor as a resource during and after the clinical rotation.  There will also be an EMS experience that will involve the nurse riding with the local EMS providers to that specific host facility.  This will allow the nurse to see first hand, the adversities that are faced by the EMS providers and give them a broader understanding of the pre-hospital experience of the patients that they will be receiving.
