Course Description:
This course will help prepare individuals that are new graduates and experienced nurses new to Emergency Nursing to function as a member of an Emergency Department Team. This course will help prepare individuals in assessment, prioritization, treatment, and critical thinking when dealing with emergent/critical situations.

This offering will is a 6 week course with didactic, clinical, and skills lab instruction specific to Emergency Nursing.

An EMS experience will be provided with a Florida accredited Emergency Medicine System. Keiser Career College in conjunction with the host facilities Emergency Room Educator/Clinician will arrange for an intern “ride along” with an EMS unit. This experience will allow interns the knowledge and understanding of what pre-hospital providers experience on a daily basis.

Method of Course Delivery:
The subject matter of this course will be delivered by lectures, active class discussion, demonstrations, videos, power point presentations, and guest speakers when deemed appropriate.

Examinations:
i) A pre-test will be given to all students to assess knowledge base.
(1) Upon completion of the course the pre-test will be re-given to assess advancement of knowledge base.
ii) Students will receive quizzes to assess knowledge retention a passing grade is 80% or better.
iii) All students must pass the final exam with a grade of 80% or better.

Course Requirements:
i) Interns must attend all classes and Skills lab experiences.
ii) Interns must successfully complete all course objectives.
iii) Complete all required reading, and other assigned work.
iv) Obtain a passing grade on Final Exam & Quizzes; a passing grade is 80% or better.


Course Outline:

Module I: Trauma Assessment & 2 minute Assessment

At the end of this module Interns will be able to verbalize components of the Primary & Secondary Assessment. They will be able to describe how to complete a head to toe assessment, and how to complete a 2 minute assessment

Module II: System Assessment, Injuries, Diseases, Treatment, and Nursing Considerations for all populations

(a) Pulmonary, Airway & Thoracic Emergencies & Management
(b) Cardiovascular Management & Emergencies
(c) Neurological Management & Emergencies
(d) Spinal Emergencies & Management
(e) Shock
(f) Endocrine Emergencies & Electrolyte Imbalances
(g) Abdominal Management & Emergencies
(h) Gentio/Urinary Management & Emergencies
(i) Obstetrical Management & Emergencies
(j) EENT & Oralmaxillo Facial Management & Emergencies
(k) Pediatric Considerations
(l) Musculoskeletal Management & Emergencies
(m) Integumetry Management & Emergencies
(n) Hematological Management & Emergencies
(o) Infectious Disease Management & Emergencies
(p) Behavioral Health Management & Emergencies

At the completion of this module the Intern will be able to assess, assist in treatment, and management of the listed selected injuries and disease processes.


Module III: Family Centered Care

Upon completion of this module the Intern will be able to verbalize aspects of family centered care; the impacts on medical staff, patients and families.

Module IV: Mass Casualty & Bioterrorism

This module will help prepare Interns for mass casualty situations, weapons of mass destruction, and environmental emergencies. Upon completion of this module the intern will be able to verbalize appropriate rapid triage decisions, and will be able given the tools to build upon to trouble shoot possible problems that may arise during selected situations.


Module V: Professional Components

Upon completion of this module the intern will be able to verbalize education opportunities open to the community, and delivery systems. The intern will be educated on organ donation and recovery. The Intern will be able to verbalize understanding of Legal aspects & Regulatory Issues in Emergency Nursing. The Intern will receive information on the National Governing Body: The Emergency Nurses Association.
