AORN Periop 101
This course is for Registered Nurses or Graduate Nurses who have already taken their boards looking to specialize in the operating room. Operating Room Nurses provide professional nursing care to patients undergoing surgery by preparing and maintaining the operating room for all surgical procedures including special equipment needed for daily procedures and emergencies. This course will provide basic didactic perioperative education that will give the novice OR nurse the rationale and theory needed to provide safe patient care, used in conjunction with a clinical preceptorship.
This course will introduce students to the AORN (Association of perioperative Registered Nurses) Standards of Practice. The course will also cover all components of the role of the perioperative nurse when functioning as a scrub person and as a circulating nurse. This course will include training in disinfection/sterilization of equipment/instrumentation, as well as safety and patient concerns in the perioperative setting. Maintaining concise and complete records and reports as well as relevant anatomy, aseptic technique, and perioperative assessment will be covered.
Upon completion of this course all students will take a final exam provided by AORN and be awarded 40 contact hours after successfully passing the final examination with an 80% or higher grade. Upon successful completion of the final exam, there is a complimentary one year AORN membership.
